Scholarship & Grant Program Criteria
The establishment of the Scholarship & Grant Program offers the opportunity for the SIUC Black Alumni Group to financially assist Black undergraduate and graduate students currently attending Southern Illinois University at the Carbondale Campus.
There are two (2) methods of funding: Scholarships and Grants. The Scholarships are awarded at the Black Alumni Group Reunion on a biennial basis. The Grants are awarded every semester as emergency funding for books, lab fees and/required school supplies.
Due Dates
All materials MUST BE RECEIVED no later than May 4, for consideration.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Black Alumni Group (BAG) Scholarships and Grants, you must be a Black student currently matriculating at Southern Illinois University Carbondale at the time of application and meet the criteria outlined by the scholarship or grant guidelines.
Scholarship and Grant Program Details
All BAG scholarship programs are funded by the Black Alumni Group of the SIU Alumni Association. The selection and administration of the program is managed by the Black Alumni Group Scholarship Committee.

Support Black Undergraduate Education (SBUE) Scholarship Program
The purpose of this scholarship is to assist African-American undergraduate students at Southern Illinois University. The amount of the scholarship will be determined at a later time based on several factors including investment earnings of the endowment and donations received.
Undergraduate Criteria
- Have a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 2.75/4.0 scale
- Submit the application packet to the address listed below
- Demonstrate a history of commitment to their community through leadership activities, community service and/or work experience.
Med-Prep Student Criteria
- Have a cumulative G.P.A, of at least 3.25/4.0 scale
- Submit the application package to the address listed below
- Demonstrate a history of commitment to their community through leadership activities, community service and/or work experience.
A Complete Application Packet Consists of:
- Complete application form
- Personal Statement
- Two (2) letters of recommendation:
- One (1) from a professor
- One (1) documenting active community service/volunteerism in the Carbondale Area with the last 12 months on official letterhead
- Official transcript from the university in a separate sealed envelope
John Holmes Memorial Bridge Academic Grants
The purpose of the Bridge Academic Grants is to assist undergraduate students during the school year at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale as a way to bridge the financing gap for the applicant’s expenses during the semester. The amount of the grants is $500 and will be awarded only once during the semester. These grants are available to undergraduate students only.
Undergraduate Criteria
- Have a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 2.75/4.0 scale.
- Submit the completed application packet to the address listed above.
Program Guidelines
Scholarship funds may be applied to the cost of tuition, fees, books, lab fees and required supplies. Scholarship and Grant awards are not renewable; however, students can reapply each year as long as they continue to meet the eligibility requirements. This Scholarship Award is not transferable from SIUC to another institution.
